The Mark of Athena – Discussion / Review

The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan
Book 3 in the Heroes of Olympus series
Genre: upper middle-grade fantasy
Pages: 586
5/5 stars

Last night I finished my reread of The Mark of Athena, and it was just as amazing I remembered. I love that we finally get to read from Annabeth's perspective, to see how her mind works. Well, sort of. XD

The relationships really develop in this book for everyone... except poor Leo. We've got Percy and Annabeth (obviously), Jason and Piper, and Frank and Hazel, although Leo tries. But soon enough he meets Calypso, so I don't feel too bad for him. ;)

Of course, the plot thickens, too. Greek and Roman demigods meet (and it doesn't end well), the gods are suddenly schizophrenic due to the Greek and Roman interaction, Annabeth has to try and help Athena, and the seven take a trip to Rome to find the Doors of Death and save Nico from short twin giants with a terrible fashion sense (which is never easy). And, on top of that, Gaea decides she's going to wake up and finish her world domination plans on August 1st, only a few weeks away. Typical demigod agenda. XD

One other thing I want to bring up is how much I like Coach Hedge as a character. He's far from an appropriate chaperone, but he does really care for the seven, and he's hilarious, although he does have violent tendencies. He's a great side character, and I wish there was more about him in the books. Or that he could have his own book, although I don't really know how that would work out, and honestly I would be a bit afraid to be in his head. XP

I really love this book, and the series as a whole (and everything else Rick has written). There's lots of action and suspense, wonderful mythology, a bit of romance, and a horrible cliffhanger for an ending. Everything a book should have, and that makes it excellent for rereading. What are your opinions on this book? :)

Now I'm off to go start my reread of The House of Hades!

Ascendant???

Hello! I know I'm most likely a little behind on this, but I just found out via the Divergent Instagram page that Ascendant is coming out in March of 2017. What's Ascendant? I was under the impression that there would be an Allegiant Part 1 and an Allegiant Part 2, like many other final movies - Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, Mockingjay… but apparently not.

I wasn't too pleased with the adaptation of Insurgent, although that may be just because I haven't read the book in about a year and need to reread it. I liked it, but based on what I can recall, it was only moderately accurate to the book. Maybe (hopefully) Allegiant and Ascendant will be better - just as amazing as I thought Divergent was. If that's the case, I suppose I could accept it. But if it's not, I'll be one of many unhappy fans.

And something else that's bothering me… will Ascendant be what Allegiant Part 2 would've been? Or will all of that be crammed into Allegiant, so Ascendant can be an epilogue movie that the series never had?

I'm just really not sure about this whole situation. I know I could be pleasantly surprised with this change, but it could go badly, too. I guess the only way to find out is to wait for more news, and obviously the movies themselves.

What are your opinions on this?
